![]() All in all, I think it is a very good samurai movie with a lot of character. How could one not become depressed, greedy and an alcolohic? Zatoichi's performance is average when compared with his other performances of the same series. He is a drunk because he is depressed: he was poor to the point that he did not have money to drink tea, he did not have the money to redeem his prostitute girlfriend (which is the reason why he is greedy), he was jealous of Zatoichi and he had to do all the dirty work as a spy. I think Mifune's character was quite good(inspite of Mr. This is particularly good for people who know something about Japanese swordsmanship (iaijitsu, not kenjitsu, and Toshiro did something similar at the end of his other K urosawa movie Sanjuro). And I definitely enjoyed the iaijitsu that Toshiro used to kill the bad guy after he shot his girlfriend. ![]() But I think the plot of pitching the Yojimbo, Zatoichi, and the nine-headed- bird kunai(mistranslated as dragon)a shogunate spy is certainly a new twist. The back drop is nothing new: the usual corrupted government official and gansters fighting against each other. Although it carried the name Yojimbo, it has nothing to do with the original Akira Kurosawa creation, which was an excellent movie. Have always been a fan of Toshiro Mifune, though not so much of the blind man. I first saw this movie when it came out in VHS. Directed by: Kihachi Okamoto Cast: Ayako Wakao, Osamu Takizawa, Sakatoshi Yonekura, Shin Kishida, Shintaro Katsu, Toshiro Mifune Distributed in Australia by: Eastern Eye Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo, is the first Zatoichi film to see Shintaro Katsu go head-to-head with screen legend Toshiro Mifune.
